Phoenix, AZ – Each year, local students have the honor of participating in the “Flame of Hope” Torch Run to officially open the Martin Luther King Jr. Annual Awards Breakfast. On Friday, January 16, students from Phoenix’s Edison Elementary School will take part in the 5K Torch Run through downtown Phoenix. This will be the ninth year for this eagerly anticipated event.

“We are honored to once again be a supporter of the torch run,” said Valerie Churchwell, Small Business Engagement Manager for the Phoenix Aviation Department. “Edison Elementary has been participating in this event since it began, and it’s wonderful to see one of our Airport neighborhood schools taking part. I’m so proud of all the students.”

The event begins at 6:10 a.m. as participants depart City Hall, run west to the State Capitol, then east to the US Airways Arena before arriving at the Hyatt Downtown Phoenix Hotel at 6:50 a.m. The students will open the annual breakfast with the presentation of the torch.
