On Wednesday, November 5, a 62 year-old man was riding the bus to the Rental Car Center when he collapsed. An individual on the bus rushed to his side and began CPR with the assistance of other passengers on the bus. The bus stopped and Sergeant Michael Green arrived on-scene. Sergeant Green applied the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to the man and a shock was administered. CPR and chest compressions were started again until staff from Fire Station 19 arrived. Firefighters assisted the victim, and he was able to breathe on his own before being transported to the hospital.

Fire rescue staff applauded the efforts made by the passenger on the bus who began CPR as well as the quick action by Sergeant Green. Officer Bruce French was on-scene as well and Officer Rodney Ruiz also aided in traffic control.

Phoenix Sky Harbor, Phoenix Deer Valley and Phoenix Goodyear airports have more than 85 AEDs available. Additionally, more than 2,000 Airport employees and volunteer Navigators have been trained to administer CPR and correctly use AEDs in the event of an emergency.
