Another Neighborhood Cleanup Helps the Community

In March, more than 120 volunteers gathered to help the community as part of the Community Cleanup event organized by the Support Sky Harbor Coalition and the city of Phoenix Neighborhood Services Department. Volunteers gathered in two areas west of the Airport in the Si Se Puede and Central Park neighborhoods to assist in trash, vegetation and graffiti removal. Overall, more than 13 tons of garbage was removed.

The event began with remarks from Stephen Vital, Chief of Staff of District 8 for Councilman Michael Johnson. Volunteers from the Aviation Department included Aviation Director Danny Murphy, Assistant Aviation Directors Carl Newman and Chad Makovsky and Deputy Aviation Director Deborah Ostriecher. Deputy City Manager Jerome Miller was also in attendance as well as Acting Public Works Director John Trujillo and Phoenix Community Action Officer Mario Ancich. Employees from many businesses and community organizations volunteered at the event. These organizations were: Acquisition Sciences II, Austin Commercial, Bombardier, City of Phoenix - Aviation Department, City of Phoenix - City Manager's Office, City of Phoenix - Neighborhood Services Department, City of Phoenix - Public Works Department, Corgan Associates, CSW Contractors, D.L. Withers Construction, DM Environmental, DWL Architects + Planners, HDR, Hensel Phelps Construction, Hunt Construction, Klondyke Construction, Lea + Elliott, Perches Land, Phoenix Day, St. Matthew's Neighborhood, The C.K. Group, The Cleaner Part of Dirty, The Support Sky Harbor Coalition and the Weitz Company..

Seven girls and a troop leader from Brownie Troop 4023 from Avondale also came out to lend a hand for the community and earn a badge. Austin Commercial, CSW Construction and Hunt Construction provided pick-up trucks and Hunt Construction also provided two backhoes.

This event is the fourth cleanup hosted by the Support Sky Harbor Coalition, a non-profit corporation that strives to educate the community about the quality-of-life and economic benefits Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport brings to the Valley of the Sun. The Support Sky Harbor Coalition will host additional community cleanups later this year.
