Phoenix, AZ – America’s Friendliest Airport just got healthier!

Now travelers who have time on their hands between flights at Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport can embark on a fitness walking trail (inside of security) that takes them around Terminal 4, the Airport’s busiest.

In addition, travelers have the option of filling their own water bottles with chilled, filtered water: the airport has installed seven free bottle-filling stations past security near the entrances to all of the Terminal 4 concourses.

Meanwhile, the two-mile walking circuit can easily be mastered between flights. From the top of the A gates to the bottom of the D concourse, walkers can enjoy sights of Phoenix seen only from inside the airport - views of mountains, parks and man-made wonders.

A handy map, points of interest, mileage and photos, are all there in a new, free brochure -- PHX Fitness Trail -- available at Terminal 4 information counters or by logging onto

Please note that there’s no carry-on storage (for security purposes) so fitness aficionados need to take that roller bag or backpack along the route as well. But look at it this way: It’s added cardio!

Here are a few of the sights fitness enthusiasts will see on the trail:

  • Piestewa Peak, named after Lori Piestewa, a member of the Hopi tribe and the first Native American woman to die in combat serving with the U.S. military.
  • Camelback Mountain is a prominent Phoenix-area landmark. Its name is derived from its shape that resembles the hump and head of a kneeling camel.
  • The PHX Sky Train Bridge is the world’s largest mass transit bridge over an active taxiway at a major airport.
  • South Mountain Park/Preserve, at more than 16,000 acres, is the largest municipal park in the country.

The Sky Harbor Fitness Trail complements the city of Phoenix FitPHX initiative, a comprehensive program intended to get Phoenix residents into better shape. The FitPHX campaign will help increase Phoenix’s rankings in the American Fitness Index by better connecting the community to city health-related programs and services and by encouraging participation in physical-fitness events and other activities promoting personal wellness.
