Phoenix, AZ – Is it the future or the past? In the world of Steampunk it is both, and currently, “Steampunk: An Exquisite Adventure,” is on display through June 21, at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Six display cases are located on Level 2 of Terminal 3.

Steampunk is an inspired movement of creativity and imagination that combines science fiction, history and art. Artisans re-imagine modern technologies as elaborate works of art, fashion, and mechanics, most often with the backdrop of the Victorian era. However, in the spirit of fantasy and time-travel, there is artistic freedom to create Medieval, Wild West, Industrial/Modern or an alternative world which is known as the Steampunk genre.

There are approximately 50 objects on display and created by 36 makers who are from several Arizona cities, including Avondale, Goodyear, Glendale, Mesa, Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe. Many of the objects were created by husband and wife teams, some of whose work will also be featured in the 4th annual Wild Wild West Steampunk Convention at Old Tucson taking place March 6-8.

On display are Period-looking costumes complete with top hats or bustles along with fanciful gadgets created from random bits and bobs. Imaginative objects are all hand-crafted by the Steampunk artist. There is also a navigator outfit for an airship equipped with a windsock, compass and a hand-crafted leather backpack.

The Phoenix Airport Museum is one of the largest airport art museums in the U.S. The museum includes an art collection of nearly 900 artworks, 35 exhibition spaces in six buildings and the Phoenix Aviation Archive. For more information, visit
