Deputy Aviation Director Marchelle Franklin has been bestowed with the prestigious 2013 Living Legend Award by Phoenix College. The award honors a Phoenix College alumna who has demonstrated service to Phoenix College, has achieved excellence in his or her career and goes above and beyond in his or her commitment to the community.

Marchelle, who oversees the Community Development, Government Relations and Community Noise Reduction Division for the city of Phoenix Aviation Department received her associate’s degree from Phoenix College in 1984.

She was presented with the award on February 27 during the Annual Black History Month Luncheon. There, she spoke to over 70 members of the Black Student Union.

“I shared with them my life, my educational journey (associate’s, bachelor’s and MBA degrees) and reminded them that it is important to remember the sacrifices and our history so that they could be where they are today,” Marchelle said. “It is important to pay it forward and remember that it doesn’t require doing grand things to leave a legacy, but to live a life of remembering that to whom much is given, much is required.”

In her current role in the Aviation Department, Marchelle is involved in a variety of different roles from local, state and federal legislative affairs to small business development to leading community development initiatives responsible for increasing outreach and partnership opportunities. And, her extensive involvement with the Community Noise Reduction Program makes her a recognizable face within the community.

Before joining the Aviation Department, Marchelle served as Co-Chief of Staff to former Mayor Phil Gordon. Previously, she worked as Chief of Staff for City Councilman Michael Johnson. Prior to joining the city of Phoenix in 2002, Marchelle worked in a variety of senior and executive human resources management positions. She holds a Master’s of Business Administration degree in finance from Grand Canyon University and a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix.

For her achievement, Phoenix College presented her with a certificate and will place her name on the Black Student Living Legend Award Tree in Fannin Library. Congratulations to Marchelle on this outstanding achievement and dedication to the community!
