VIDEO_SSH-AwardThe Support Sky Harbor Coalition, a group that strives to promote the benefits of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, was honored with the Spirit of Service Award at the Governor’s Tourism Awards Gala on Thursday, July 17.

The Arizona Office of Tourism each year presents awards to honor extraordinary individuals and organizations for the vital contributions they make to Arizona’s tourism industry. The Spirit of Service award pays tribute to the volunteers who demonstrate remarkable commitment to the tourism industry. The Support Sky Harbor Coalition was recognized for its extensive neighborhood cleanups over the past year that resulted in 1,000 volunteers removing more than 100 tons of debris from local neighborhoods surrounding the Airport.

During the past year, Support Sky Harbor partnered with the city of Phoenix Aviation and Neighborhood Services departments to organize two very successful clean-ups in neighborhoods near the airport. The objective is to provide a community service in that volunteers work to better neighborhoods surrounding Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport by picking up trash, debris and yard waste, removing graffiti, and doing other clean-up work. The residents in these neighborhoods would not have the resources to organize such a large, comprehensive cleanup project.

The difference made in just a few hours on a Saturday morning is remarkable. In fact, the November clean-up in partnership with the Wilson School District had 450 volunteers from the Support Sky Harbor Coalition and 300-400 volunteers from the Wilson School District. More than 66 tons of trash and debris were removed, including 146 tires. In March, the Coalition partnered with Cesar Chavez Community School. More than 260 volunteers from the Support Sky Harbor Coalition attended along with 30 volunteers from the school. More than 38 tons of debris and trash were removed, including 112 tires.

"The Sky Harbor Neighborhood Association is grateful for the partnership we have built with the Support Sky Harbor Coalition and the city of Phoenix's Neighborhood Services Department, Hilaria Rodriguez, President of Sky Harbor Neighborhood Association said. “Twice, they have provided hundreds of volunteers, along with tractors and other heavy equipment to remove nearly 100 tons of garbage and debris from our alleyways and throughout the neighborhood. They made a tremendous difference in our neighborhood.”

The Support Sky Harbor Coalition is a non-profit organization whose mission is to educate the community about the economic and quality-of-life benefits of the Airport. It provides support for local organizations such as the USO and New Pathways for Youth, organizes community clean-ups, and offers its tool trailers to other organizations for their own community clean-ups. Congratulations to the Support Sky Harbor Coalition on receiving this prestigious honor!
