Phoenix Sky Harbor Continues to Innovate

We love hitting milestones and this time we did it globally! We are one of the busiest airports in the world and Waymo knows it. In December, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport became the first airport in the world to offer driverless taxi service via Waymo. The autonomous vehicle connects passengers between downtown Phoenix and the airport 24 hours seven days a week.

Two months ago, passengers in the Trusted Tester program rode the fully electric Jaguar I-PACE with an autonomous specialist in the driver’s seat, making sure operations were running smoothly. After successful operations, in December, Waymo launched fully autonomous service to the airport, opening it to all travelers.

“Phoenix is leading the future of mobility and modernizing how the world will experience travel,” said Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego after she took the first ride to the Airport. “The exciting technology offers our customers an additional option for traveling to the airport in a clean, sustainable, and technologically advanced mode of transportation. The future has arrived in Phoenix!”

Travelers can currently use the Waymo services by booking a ride in the app for pick up or drop off at the 44th Street PHX Sky Train® Station.

Important Tips for Super Bowl LVII Travelers

Super Bowl LVII will be here before we know it, and we are once again looking forward to welcoming travelers to the Valley of the Sun for the Big Game. Various events across the area, including the Super Bowl and the Waste Management Phoenix Open, mean that we will be busy. Feb. 13, the day after the Super Bowl, is anticipated to be one our busiest days on record.

We’re providing tips to make it easier for those coming to Phoenix for the game and its activities.

  • If you are planning to rent a car, make sure to reserve your car in advance. Our rental car operators will be busy and vehicles may be limited for walk-up customers.
  • If you are not renting a car, use Valley Metro Rail to travel between the Airport and downtown Phoenix. The free PHX Sky Train® offers an easy connection between all airport terminals and Valley Metro Rail. After disembarking from the PHX Sky Train, make sure to purchase your pass from the Valley Metro fare vending machine. Then, take Valley Metro Rail westbound and get off at the Third Street/Washington Station. It's a quick and easy ride to all Super Bowl LVII activities in downtown Phoenix. For more information on Valley Metro Rail, visit https://www.valleymetro.org/.
  • If you have questions while in the airport, ask one of our friendly volunteer Navigators in the purple jackets. They will be stationed with Super Bowl volunteers who can answer questions about Super Bowl events.

For those traveling on Feb. 13, here are some important tips:

Remember 5-4-3-2-1. 5 hours before departure - Check out of your hotel; 4 hours before departure – Turn in your rental car; 3 hours before departure – Check in at the Ticket Counter; 2 hours before departure – Get in line at the TSA Security Checkpoint; and 1 hour before departure – Be at your gate.

  • If you have a Super Bowl program, please place it in your carry-on bag. For questions about carry-on and checked items, visit TSA.gov  And, remember, if you are traveling with needed medications, to be sure and place them in your carry-on bag.
  • Save time and skip the airline ticket counter - use Early Bag Check. Check your bags before boarding the PHX Sky Train® at the 44th Street Station or at the Rental Car Center Station. Bags must be checked a minimum of 90 minutes before your flight. This service is available for those flying American, Delta, Southwest, or United. No additional charge though individual airline bag fees apply. It will be available on Sunday, Feb. 12 and Monday, Feb. 13 only. Learn more at skyharbor.com/superbowl.
  • Visit skyharbor.com to check flight status and see what shops and restaurants are near your gate. Many shops both before and after security will be selling an assortment of Super Bowl LVII merchandise.
  • You can also view security wait times on skyharbor.com and on the flight information screens in the terminals. If you are traveling through Terminal 4, you can use any of the four security checkpoints to access your gate.  Looking to save your place and reduce your wait?  Use the PHX RESERVE program. Schedule your time prior to arriving at the airport on our website. You can schedule your time up to six days in advance.
  • If you or someone you will be traveling with has a hidden disability such as dementia or autism, you can reserve a Compassion Cacti™ Lanyard in advance, which signals to employees that you may need extra time, assistance, or patience in the travel process. You can even schedule a Navigator Support Guide to accompany you through the airport. Learn more.
  • And remember, as you are traveling through, if you See Something Say Something. Report suspicious behavior to law enforcement staff.

For more travel tips, visit skyharbor.com/superbowl.  We look forward to welcoming you.

Looking Back at 2022

With a new year, comes resolutions and goals. But, it’s important to also look back at what was achieved in the prior year.

2022 was a big year for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport with many highlights.

We set milestones with becoming the first airport in the U.S. to offer travelers the ability to show their ID digitally through the Apple Wallet.  And, we set a global milestone by becoming the first airport in the world to offer travelers the ability to take a Waymo autonomous vehicle as a means of transportation to and from the airport.

We opened a new eight gate concourse at our busiest terminal, Terminal 4.

We completed Stage 2 of the PHX Sky Train® extending the system 2.5 miles to the Rental Car Center and adding a new station and economy parking facility at 24th Street.

We celebrated the fifth anniversary of our therapy dog program, the Navigator Buddies.

We’re focusing on our future and commitment to sustainability. As a result, we received the Level 4 Transformation rating from Airports Council International’s Airport Carbon Accreditation Program. We are currently only one of four airports in the U.S. to have achieved the Level 4 or 4+ rating tier.

In 2022, 12 airlines initiated new nonstop service to 19 markets from PHX. We also saw the return of international service – American’s London flight, Condor’s Frankfurt flight, and Air Canada’s Montreal flight. We welcomed new airlines like Breeze and Southern Express Airways, Frontier Airlines also announced they are opening a crew base in Phoenix.

We are home to the first City of Phoenix project to benefit from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, starting with the construction of a long-awaited cross-field taxiway connecting the north and south airfields. This taxiway will allow for better aircraft flow for airfield operations. In October, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego welcomed White House Infrastructure Coordinator Mitch Landrieu and Congressman Greg Stanton to the Airport for a kick-off event.

We held monthly Job Fairs to fill thousands of positions. And, we launched an Airport Worker Child Care Scholarship Program to help our vital frontline workers who support the essential travel operation.

We also added a new service to support customers who are blind or have low vision. The service, called Aira, assists passengers with a variety of needs, including moving through crowds, avoiding obstacles, finding gates, and more.

And, we’re preparing for the upcoming Super Bowl. In August, the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee unveiled the Super Bowl LVII countdown clock in Terminal 4. We look forward to welcoming visitors to Phoenix for the Big Game in February.

These are just a few of the many highlights from 2022. We also launched PHX RESERVE, allowing travelers to save a place in the security checkpoint line to reduce their wait; celebrated another successful Wings for Autism event; held the 12 Days of Gratitude in December to thank our customers; opened a United Club in Terminal 3; among others. We also received numerous honors, including being recertified by the Global BioRisk Advisory Council for sanitation and cleanliness; receiving the Spirit of Service Award at the Governor’s Tourism Awards for our Compassion Cacti™ lanyard program; our 8th concourse was selected as the Best Aviation/Transit Project by Engineering News-Record Southwest; receiving the Environmental Achievement Award in Innovation from Airports Council International – North America-for our Eighth Concourse; and we were the recipient for the National Recycling Coalition’s 2022 Outstanding Outreach Program for our recycling efforts.  These were just a few of the many honors.

We look forward to another exciting year ahead!
