90 Years at PHX: 1970s

As part of our year-long 90th anniversary celebration, we’re looking back at the previous decades in our history. The 1970s saw many changes in Phoenix and Arizona. Raul H. Castro became Arizona’s first Hispanic governor and Mary Jo West became Phoenix’s first woman news anchor. Disco and punk were popular musical genres, and the U.S. saw the first celebration of Earth Day, Watergate, and the arrival of George Lucas’ Star Wars films.

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego announced last month that STARLUX Airlines intends to begin new nonstop flights between Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Taipei’s Taoyuan Airport in Taiwan. The service, pending final government approvals, would begin early next year, with three to four flights a week.

Taxiway U Construction Ramping Up

Taxiway U is starting to take shape. Since construction on the 2,000-foot-long cross-field taxiway kicked into high gear, refurbishment of old buildings and reconfiguration of the Facilities and Services to clear space for the taxiway have taken place. Excavation between Sky Harbor Boulevard and Buckeye Road between Copperhead and 27th Street for a new bridge is visible to airport visitors.
