Phoenix Sky Harbor’s 90th Anniversary Campaign Wins Top Honors at National Airport Awards
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport was recently honored at Airports Council International-North America’s 2025 Excellence in Airport Marketing, Communications and Customer Experience Awards. The airport’s 90th Anniversary Campaign was the winner of the Public Relations Programs – Large Airport award. PHX’s Culture Corner Program was also a finalist in the Customer Experience Programs – Large Airports category.
To mark the 90th anniversary of the City of Phoenix purchasing Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, PHX created a year-long celebration designed to engage travelers, employees, and the community while showcasing its vibrant history and future.
The year began with the launch of the Culture Corner program in January. The Culture Corner, located post-security in Terminal 3, features monthly programs that highlight Arizona’s diversity. This included exciting content from the Phoenix Zoo, Heard Museum, Musical Instrument Museum, Phoenix Sister Cities Taipei Committee, Arizona Heritage Foundation and more.
Additionally, over the past year, PHX has had several social media campaigns spotlighting longtime employees, key milestones from each decade, and “90 Things We Love About PHX.”
The airport also produced a commemorative trading card and special-edition employee newsletter as well as launched a dedicated anniversary website section offering videos, historical facts, and articles. In addition to airport signage and videos, a unique museum exhibition called “From Farm Field to Airfield” opened in Terminal 4. It highlights nine decades of airport history. In July, the airport also held its signature celebratory event – a 90s Dance PAW-Ty featuring the Navigator Buddies and employees dressed in 90s attire and leading an airport-wide dance party. It also included a proclamation from Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego declaring July as a day to celebrate the airport’s anniversary.
Throughout the year, PHX has also had terminal trivia games and special Traveling Tunes performances highlighting music through the decades. Most recently, the airport sang happy birthday in the Terminal 4 Baggage Claim and offered visitors an opportunity to sign a life-size birthday card.
