Local Favorite Tacos Chiwas Broadens Base at PHX

Phoenix restaurateur Armando Hernandez and his wife, Nadia Holguin, wanted to share the flavors of their native Chihuahua, Mexico foods in their own eateries, and Phoenix Sky Harbor is reaping the benefits.

Armando and Nadia, the owners of growing casual Phoenix restaurant Tacos Chiwas, have opened another store, operating now in Terminal 4, post-security, between gates B1 and B14.

“It’s one of those things that it’s such a blessing for (the airport) to want us to be here,” he said in describing the path that brought the couple to Phoenix Sky Harbor. “We’re so blessed that we’re not going to allow opportunities in which we can showcase what we do to get away from us.”

The business owners have been recognized by industry luminaries and made an appearance on Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives,” earning Guy Fieri’s compliments and a second appearance on the show.

What’s the secret to their success?

“No secret, baby, it’s all hard work,” Armando said with a laugh. “It’s those 17-, 16-hour days, seven days a week. It’s being consistent, being present.”

Investing all that time in their business allows them to do things like make tortillas from scratch and cook pork for hours to create carnitas, some of the hallmark foods of their restaurant.

His biggest piece of advice for other entrepreneurs as well as customers: “My advice to people in general is to support local. They need the love. It goes a long way.”
