90th Anniversary Employee Spotlight: Candace H.
When walking around all parts of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, Deputy Aviation Director for Design and Construction Services Candace H. sees the finished product, and also recalls all the work that went into making it happen. Candace has worked in the City of Phoenix Aviation Department for 27 years, after beginning her career with the Washington State Department of Transportation, helping design floating bridges.
As a civil engineer, she started at the airport working on runways and roadways and has helped build or reconstruct all three runways at PHX. She also worked on post-9/11 physical changes to security in the terminals. Since then, she’s had a hand in just about every major construction project at the airport.
Candace says she’s loved her quarter-century plus of building projects at the airport: “They're like little cities in and of themselves, because you have to deal with so many different facets,” Candace says. “It's not just providing infrastructure for people to utilize. It's where people meet and greet. It's where families get together. It takes you just about everywhere in the world from an airport. To be able to be part of that service and part of that community is amazing.”
She also has enjoyed working with colleagues she says are invested in their jobs and roll their sleeves up and jump in whenever a need arises.
