First-Ever Flights to Canada’s Capital Begin in February
Porter Airlines recently announced new nonstop service between Phoenix and Ottawa starting Feb. 7 and running through April 13. This will be the first-ever nonstop service between Phoenix and Canada’s capital. With the new flights, it’s easier than ever to make a visit to this interesting city. Here are some recommendations of things to do once you’re there.
Yes, it’s cold in Canada in February, but Ottawa knows how to thrive in winter. While the dates for Winterlude 2026 haven’t been announced yet, this lively festival and Ottawa’s biggest winter event, generally takes place in February. Attendees will find concerts, ice and snow sculptures, snow rides and much more.
Ice skating is iconic in Ottawa as visitors can skate on the Rideau Canal. In fact, this shouldn’t be missed. The Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage site, turns into the world’s largest skating rink and stretches nearly five miles through the city.
If you can’t get enough winter activities, head to Gatineau Park just 20 minutes from the city to find more than 100 miles of cross-country and snowshoe trails. These are some of the best in Canada. Within the Greenbelt area of Ottawa, winter sports enthusiasts will also find 93 miles of trails for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing as well as areas for tobogganing.
With the cold temps, you’re bound to want to warm up. Grab a hot chocolate from a local café. Many cafes offer creative twists on the traditional favorite as well. After you’ve warmed up, be sure to check out one of Ottawa’s museums. The National Gallery of Canada features both Indigenous works and European classics. The Canadian Museum of Nature is a good option for families with its dinosaur exhibitions, and the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau provides visitors with a number of special exhibitions and great skyline views. Other museums in Ottawa include the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, the Canadian War Museum, and the Canadian Science and Technology Museum among others.
Perhaps one of the most iconic buildings in Canada is the Parliament building. Head to Parliament Hill to see the gorgeous Gothic architecture. Free guided tours are available and visitors can see the Senate, House of Commons, East Block and Parliament. Make sure to reserve your tickets in advance.
The ByWard Market district offers visitors a chance to explore restaurants, boutiques, bakeries, art galleries and more. The city also offers a variety of performing arts. Check out shows at the National Arts Center or with the Great Canadian Theatre Company.
Spa and wellness activities are also popular. Many Nordic-spa treatments are available.
