90th Anniversary Employee Spotlight: Lisa F.

For nearly two decades, Lisa F. has been an important part of the Phoenix Airport System. An employee since 2006, she now serves as Environmental Planning Project Manager, where she leads sustainability and safety efforts across Phoenix Sky Harbor, Deer Valley, and Goodyear airports. Her work helps ensure compliance with environmental regulations while protecting both the community and the natural world.

Meet Charles Greenwald, a Longtime Navigator Volunteer

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the volunteer Navigator program at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. You can spot these helpful volunteers by their signature purple vests, shirts or blazers, always ready with a warm smile to assist travelers. As part of the celebration for this milestone, we are featuring longtime volunteer Charles Greenwald. Originally from Philadelphia, Charles has dedicated nearly 22 years to the Navigator program, contributing more than 4,800 volunteer hours.

United Employees Join to Fight Hunger

United Airlines employees gathered in early September to pack meals for the community. Airline workers volunteered for four hours to take part in a Rise Against Hunger meal-packing event at Terminal 3. About 15 employees pitched in during the volunteer time period and packed nearly 8,000 meals.

Fundraiser Now Underway to Help Pilot Land Safely

Pilot, believed to be a Doberman mix, had been spotted navigating traffic and harsh conditions around Phoenix Sky Harbor and nearby freeways. In the early hours of Aug. 23, a team of community volunteers, PHX team members and animal rescue groups worked together to safely capture him.

Eastbound Sky Harbor Boulevard to be Closed Nightly for Two Weeks

Project work at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport’s Terminal 3 will be closing a major route through the airport nightly for two weeks. Beginning the evening of Sept. 23, eastbound Sky Harbor Boulevard on the north side of Terminal 3 will be closed 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. nightly, through and including the night of Monday, Oct. 6. All eastbound traffic during those times must detour through Terminal 3’s inner curb lanes, which will remain open. Significant traffic delays are expected due to the closure of this key corridor through the airport.

Up Next: The Taxiway U Bridge Deck Will Take Shape

Progress continues on the Taxiway Uniform project, and crews will soon begin setting the deck for the first new bridge. Approximately 6,000 tons of concrete will be required to form the bridge deck. Later phases of the project will include building bridge sections over Buckeye Road and westbound Sky Harbor Boulevard.

A collaboration between the Phoenix Airport Museum and Barrow Neurological Institute has brought a new art exhibit to the medical facility, allowing patients, families and staff to enjoy five selected pieces from local artists. The institute’s foundation worked with the Phoenix Airport Museum to choose works by local artists and install them in the Neuroplex building on the Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center Campus.

The Sept. 2 Aviation Job Fair attracted 490 attendees. Phoenix Sky Harbor business partners interviewed 438 people and hired 36 new employees on the spot at the job fair. Next month’s Aviation Job Fair is on Oct. 7. More information at skyharbor.com/jobs.

Birdwatcher’s Report

Phoenix Sky Harbor had a special guest visitor in the late afternoon on August 25 when a Lufthansa Airbus A380 diverted from LAX to PHX due to weather at LAX. The A380 is the largest passenger aircraft in the world and seeing one land unexpectedly is always a rare treat.
