Two New Texas Destinations Offer an Array of Activities
American Airlines recently announced several new flight options from Phoenix. These include two Texas cities, which offer visitors an opportunity to experience the arts and culture of the state. Beginning June 4, American will offer nonstop daily flights between Phoenix and Abilene and Phoenix and McAllen.
Here are some activities you can enjoy in each city.
Abilene
Abilene is known for its frontier spirit. It offers visitors a Downtown Culture District with parks, museums, shopping, and a chance to truly experience the heritage and culture of the area.
Visitors will find the 12th Armored Division Museum, which pays tribute to World War II heroes as well as Frontier Texas, which brings the Old West to life with stories and exhibits.
Families will enjoy visiting the Abilene Zoo as well as strolling through the many storybook gardens in town. In fact, Everman Park has bronze Dr. Seuss characters while Clear Fork Bank Storybook Garden has Winnie-the-Pooh sculptures. The Adamson-Spalding Storybook Garden is also popular with its local charm and whimsical feel.
McAllen
McAllen is an arts and culture destination. Located in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley, visitors can check out the art scene by visiting more than two dozen galleries in the Arts District. If you’re there on a first Friday between September and May, do not miss the Art Walk where you can not only explore the various galleries but also meet artists, see shows, and more.
Other attractions include the International Museum of Art & Sciences, which provides visitors with an opportunity to explore art from around the world. Bird lovers will not want to miss Quinta Mazatlán where they can hike through 15 acres of birding habitat and see the birds that live and migrate there. In fact, the area is the McAllen wing of the World Bird Center.
There are other parks and areas available for relaxation, picnicking and walking. Downtown also offers several shops and restaurants to check out local favorites.
