Congratulations to British Airways on 30 Years of Service at PHX

June 18, 2026

July 1 marks the 30th anniversary of British Airways service between Phoenix and London.

Since the inaugural flight in 1996, this transatlantic connection has played a vital role in linking our region with one of the world’s most influential cities. The service carried 102,702 passengers in its first full year and has grown to serve more than 214,350 annually today, three decades later.

What began as a single long-haul route has grown alongside our airport and community, adapting to demand with aircraft upgrades, added frequencies, and a steady rise in passengers traveling for business, leisure, and global connections.

Over the years, the route has evolved into a powerful gateway between Arizona and Europe.

The Phoenix to London flight has delivered significant economic value to our local region. International service brings visitors who support local hotels, restaurants, and attractions, while also strengthening business ties between Arizona companies and global partners. These connections help sustain jobs, boost tourism spending and drive investment that supports the statewide economy. International flights in general significantly boost Arizona's economy by bringing in about $3 billion each year.

The flight also helped expand Phoenix Sky Harbor’s international destination portfolio. Today, Phoenix Sky Harbor serves 25 cities outside the U.S., including Paris, France; Taipei, Taiwan; numerous cities in Mexico and Canada; and the London route.

This anniversary is also special for one of our own. Tim Spahr, now a PHX Concessions Project Manager, was part of the original British Airways team that helped plan the Phoenix to London service. His work with Arizona businesses and local leaders supported the route’s launch and shaped his aviation career in Phoenix.

As we mark 30 years with British Airways, we look forward to continuing this legacy of connection and welcoming new global opportunities for travelers throughout Arizona.
