Runway Fiber Loop Creates Resilient Path

June 18, 2026
Earlier this year, the city of Phoenix Aviation Department partnered with the Federal Aviation Administration to complete a project that boosts safety and communications for aircraft. The project, on the Phoenix Sky Harbor airfield, pulled fiber through underground infrastructure. The installation created important redundancy, with a second fiber path now in place for multiple systems.
“The FAA resilient fiber pathway provides an additional communication route that strengthens the reliability of critical airfield systems,” said Jamie Ritchie, assistant chief information officer at Phoenix Sky Harbor. “The project enhances safety, improves resiliency, and supports continuous, stable FAA operations. This infrastructure investment represents a significant step forward in sustaining safe, efficient operations at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.”
Contractors, FAA staff and city of Phoenix Aviation Department team members all contributed to the project.
