Women's History Month Underway at PHX
Women's History Month is being celebrated nationally, and the City of Phoenix Aviation Department is commemorating the vital role of women in American history by showcasing them and their careers.
More than 200 women are employed by the Aviation Department, echoing women in aviation dating back to Amelia Earhart (1897-1937) who made a historic visit to Phoenix before PHX existed. One of these Aviation Department employees is Sabrina R., a communications dispatcher in the Aviation Department command center for more than nine years.
“It’s an empowering environment for women, and working with them to solve issues that pop up at the airport takes a lot of communication and problem-solving,” she said. “It can help you come out of your shell.”
We will be featuring Aviation Department employees on our social media channels the rest of the month. Look for Aviation Supervisors Lesley G. and Gwendolyn S., whose experience dates back to the 1990s, and others.
Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society and has been observed annually in the United States since 1987.
