City Council Approves Taxiway U

On April 20, Phoenix City Council approved the plans to build a new cross-field taxiway at Sky Harbor, the first to connect the north and south airfields from the west side of the terminals. This taxiway will provide a needed crossing west of Terminal 3 and help to improve the flow of aircraft between the two airfields. This is also significant as it will be the first City of Phoenix project to benefit from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, an investment in long-term Arizona infrastructure, including airport development, which was passed by Congress late last year.

The project is estimated to cost $260 million, of which $194 million is anticipated to come from the Infrastructure Law with the remaining funds covered by Passenger Facility Charges and other airport revenues. This will be the fourth cross-field taxiway at Sky Harbor and will be known as Taxiway Uniform (U) to follow the other three taxiways named after the aviation alphabet (from east to west are Romeo, Sierra, Tango). It will be approximately 2,160 feet long, designed to accommodate a Group V aircraft, meaning the wingspan will be under the 214 feet, for normal operations. It is currently in the design phase with construction anticipated to last through 2026.
