May is Museum Month

May is Museum Month and we are celebrating our very own Phoenix Airport Museum. Did you know that art at the Airport has been a tradition since the 1960s? Check out these other fun facts:

  • The original Sky Harbor Art Program became the Phoenix Airport Museum in 1988.
  • The museum’s first exhibition featured children’s artwork about dental hygiene.
  • The Phoenix Airport Museum currently has more than 40 changing exhibition areas throughout the entire Phoenix Airport System, including Sky Harbor, Deer Valley and Goodyear Airports, as well as the Rental Car Center.
  • There are more than 1,000 artworks in the museum’s collection. This includes large-scale artwork, like artist-designed terrazzo floors and outdoor sculptures, as well as “portable works” like paintings, ceramics, fine art prints and other art mediums. Like most museums, only about five to 10 percent of the collection is on display at a given time.
  • Over the last 34 years, the Phoenix Airport Museum has curated more than 530 exhibitions featuring a wide range of art and historical themes highlighting Arizona’s culture.
  • Some of the past exhibition themes included motorcycle culture, hand-painted skateboards, vintage flight attendant uniforms and instruments from a local guitar-making school.
  • Currently, there are 21 exhibitions on display and 152 artists on view throughout the airport.
  • Because Sky Harbor is the front door to our city and state, the Phoenix Airport Museum’s art and exhibitions present visitors with the inexhaustible variety of artistic talent and cultural resources Arizona has to offer.
