Phoenix Sky Harbor Celebrates Earth Month
PHOENIX – America’s Friendliest Airport® is celebrating Earth Month throughout April, focusing on environmental awareness, sustainability, and resiliency. As a leader in airport sustainability, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport aims to build a future that is smart, sustainable, and community focused. This month, the Aviation Department will highlight and amplify the Phoenix Airport System’s ongoing sustainability efforts and goals through a series of events and online communications.
SOAR with STEAM
On April 16, Phoenix Sky Harbor and Southwest Airlines will welcome 180 students from Wilson Middle School and Estrella Middle School to participate in activities, learn about sustainability, airplanes, and the science of aviation. The day will revolve around Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) topics, with a focus on sustainability and the environment, as well as interactive activities with local businesses and the Phoenix Airport Museum that blend science with art.
Earth Day
Earth Day will be celebrated in the terminals and at the 44th Street PHX Sky Train® Station on April 22, with the Aviation Department’s Sustainability team, PHX Navigators, the Water Services Department, Public Works Department, Public Transit Department, the Office of Environmental Programs and Valley Metro. The celebration will be filled with eco-friendly giveaways, mascots, Navigator Buddies visits, music, and games for travelers and employees.
PHX Green Business Partner Program
Last year, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport was a recipient of the 2025 Airports Going Green Award℠ for the PHX Green Business Partner Program. This award signifies the airport’s efforts in innovation and leadership in aviation sustainability. The program currently has 27 companies representing 68 locations at PHX, all of which are recognized at either the gold, silver or green level.
Additional Sustainability Efforts
The City of Phoenix Aviation Department is committed to ensuring Phoenix Sky Harbor, along with Deer Valley and Goodyear airports are Future Friendly and enhance the surrounding communities. Last year, Phoenix Deer Valley Airport (DVT) and Phoenix Goodyear Airport (GYR) received Level 3 status in the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program for the reporting year 2024. Phoenix Sky Harbor has been certified at Level 4 through the ACA program since 2021.
The airport focuses on a variety of areas including air and climate, energy, land stewardship, waste, and water. Highlights include:
- More than 1.2 million square feet of facilities have been designed to LEED Silver or Gold certification standards to reduce overall energy use while maintaining comfort and safety.
- An all-electric PHX Sky Train® to reduce emissions and alleviate airport traffic congestion.
- Converting non-functional turf into drought-tolerant xeriscaping across 11 acres to save more than 5 million gallons of water per year.
Utilizing low-flow restroom fixtures to conserve water. - Providing access to more than 360 recycling bins across public and employee areas.
