PHX to Honor Airport Volunteers
PHOENIX – Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is recognizing its dedicated volunteers during Volunteer Appreciation Week, taking place April 22–28. The volunteer program is a cornerstone of guest service at America’s Friendliest Airport®. From the Navigators to the Navigator Buddies, Teen Navigators, and Navigator Chaplains, these volunteers play a key role in helping Phoenix Sky Harbor deliver a world‑class experience.
Known for their purple attire, the friendly and dedicated Navigators help guests with directions, information, and general support throughout the airport to make their travel easier and more enjoyable. Since the program’s inception in 2000, more than 1,800 volunteers have contributed 1.7 million-plus hours of service at Phoenix Sky Harbor.
Other PHX volunteers include Navigator Buddies, a popular and warmly received therapy dog program that gives passengers the chance to interact with accredited therapy animals; Teen Navigators, high school students ages 14 and older who volunteer alongside experienced Navigators during the summer; and Navigator Chaplains, who offer spiritual comfort and guidance to those who seek it.
“All volunteers play an essential role in maintaining the high standards of America’s Friendliest Airport®,” said Deputy Aviation Director for Public Relations Heather Shelbrack. “Their dedication, compassion and service help ensure that millions of travelers each year feel welcome and supported from the moment they arrive at Phoenix Sky Harbor.”
During this year’s Volunteer Appreciation Week, Phoenix Sky Harbor is celebrating its Navigators with a sports-themed focus that recognizes them as the airport’s Most Valuable Players. Throughout the week, Navigators will take part in activities that include sharing memorable moments and highlighting their best tips for smooth travel at PHX. Members of the Phoenix Sky Harbor executive team will also shadow a Navigator to experience the exceptional service volunteers provide each day.
