Past, Present and Future
Desert Innovation
Location: Terminal 4, level 3 (post-security) D-gate walkway
From ancient canal systems to high-tech research labs, Phoenix has a long tradition of turning challenges into opportunities. The desert climate inspired early solutions in sustainability, agriculture and water management, laying the foundation for a future driven by bold ideas and practical ingenuity.
Phoenix’s climate has shaped the city’s industries and growth. Great weather helped establish the Valley as a center for aviation and aerospace innovation – a tradition that continues today. The dry climate attracted individuals seeking health benefits, supporting the development of a strong medical and bioscience sector. Phoenix’s tech roots, planted in the mid-20th century, have blossomed into a thriving technology corridor. From the ancient Hohokam canal system to modern water and energy infrastructure, adapting to the desert environment has consistently encouraged innovation and resourcefulness.
Today, Phoenix is one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation, guided by the same spirit of resilience and experimentation. Desert Innovation reflects a future shaped by creativity, ingenuity and a deep connection to place.
Desert Innovation is a large-scale “photo mural” celebrating the talent and industry leadership that is shaping Greater Phoenix. Installed throughout Terminal 4, level 3 (post-security) near the D-gates at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, the images and information invite travelers to see how Phoenix is building a stronger, more sustainable economy for all. Originating from a request by Mayor Kate Gallego, the project is a partnership between Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and the Greater Phoenix Economic Council (GPEC).
