Take a walk through the Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve where a 1.2-mile boardwalk offers up-close views of swamps teeming with wildlife such as otters, birds, and native vegetation. Other options include the Hickey Creek Migration Park which is part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail and Sanibel’s J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge.

Nearby Cape Coral has the largest Florida population of burrowing owls, and you can see the majestic manatees at Manatee Park in Fort Myers or Lovers Key State Park in nearby Bonita Springs.

One of the more unique and unmissable things in the area are the Edison and Ford Winter Estates. The preserve features Thomas Edison’s historical lab, botanical gardens, and Ford’s well-known architecture. Take a guided tour and don’t miss these historic gems.

Other arts and culture options in the area include exploring downtown Fort Myers, which features a rejuvenated River District with galleries, local boutiques, and seasonal festivals. Be sure to check the calendar of events for upcoming celebrations. Additional museum options include Williams Academy Black History Museum and the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center.
