Key Support Structures Now in Place for Taxiway U Project
Crews have successfully installed all the piers (bridge supports) for the taxiway bridge that will span over eastbound Sky Harbor Boulevard. This is a major construction milestone for the Taxiway Uniform project, also referred to as Taxiway U. With the piers in place, crews started setting the bridge girders on top of them. These girders will form the main structural support for the taxiway bridge.
Taxiway U will connect the north and south airfields on the west end of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to improve aircraft flow, reduce taxi times, and support future airport growth. Currently, the only taxiways at PHX are on the east end of the airfield.
Next, a cast-in-place concrete bridge deck will be placed over the girders in the coming months. Nearly 6,000 tons of concrete will be required to create the bridge deck, which will serve as the final ride surface for the taxiway as it crosses over airport roadways.
The bridge spans over Buckeye Road and westbound Sky Harbor Boulevard will be constructed during a later phase of the project.
Roadway restrictions for this project will be coming soon. For now, follow the progress by downloading the Taxiway U app from your phone’s app store to receive up to date construction-related information and stay informed about current conditions at Phoenix Sky Harbor: Apple App Store or Google Play.
