Phoenix Airport Museum Artist Spotlight: Ron Gasowski
The Phoenix Airport Museum recently placed a new colorful ceramic sculpture on display by artist Ron Gasowski (1941 – 2023), titled I’ll Bet John Wayne Never Met a Minotaur.
Ron Gasowski was an Arizona artist with a lifelong passion for making art with both traditional and non-traditional materials. He often created custom ceramic tiles with found objects like coffee mugs, dinnerware and glass bottles. Using geometry and a bit of chance, Gasowski broke up the objects into small “tiles” and adhered each piece onto large concrete forms to create unique mosaic artworks.
One of Gasowski’s most notable public art projects was transforming the structural columns near Terminal 4’s food court into sculptural works of art, titled Six Columns. Gasowski was selected for the project in 1990, and with the help of more than 800 Phoenix area students, created thousands of custom clay tiles for the mosaic columns. The columns are still on view today in Terminal 4 on level 3 near the center.
