People @ PHX: Luis E., Urban Forestry Technician, Landscape Maintenance, Facilities and Services

August 18, 2026

Luis E., an Urban Forestry Technician in Facilities and Services at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, works to care for the trees and landscape that millions of visitors see. Healthy trees and thoughtfully landscaped areas help shape how people experience the airport from the moment they arrive. His work is one of the essential pieces of the airport puzzle, supporting a system that keeps millions of journeys moving every year.

On a typical day, Luis tends to some of the thousands of trees and plants that line PHX’s roads and walkways. He prunes, plants and maintains vegetation, operates heavy forestry equipment, and responds when monsoon storms leave debris on sidewalks or boulevards. Luis and his colleagues keep sight lines clear and public areas safe so travelers can move through the airport without disruption.

Luis joined Phoenix Sky Harbor nearly three years ago, bringing more than 25 years of landscaping experience and a passion for transforming outdoor spaces. A standout moment in his time at PHX was helping redesign a long-empty boulevard island into a sustainable landscape using rescued saguaros, agaves and other native plants saved from construction areas.

He takes pride in seeing travelers enjoy the spaces he and his colleagues maintain. “It feels good to look at a place and know we made it better, and to know we help shape the first and last impression travelers have of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport,” Luis says.
