Jeff R. helps keep Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport operating smoothly by responding quickly when critical systems fail. As a Building Equipment Operator II and Project Lead, he maintains the airport’s heating and cooling infrastructure and troubleshoots issues with passenger boarding jet bridges, automatic doors and perimeter gates across the airport. In Jeff’s terms, he helps maintain anything with a motor!
“In an airport, every piece of infrastructure is connected,” says Jeff. “If a jet bridge stops working, planes can’t unload or board, and that creates an immediate ripple effect of flight delays. When my team responds fast to jetway calls, keeps perimeter access gates secure for airfield vehicles, and makes sure automatic doors operate smoothly, we prevent bottlenecks.”
Jeff joined the Aviation Department in 2024 after serving as a critical systems engineer at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. He came to the city of Phoenix seeking long-term stability and the opportunity to work on large-scale infrastructure.
One accomplishment that stands out for Jeff is stepping up from Building Equipment Operator I to Building Equipment Operator II, a milestone that opened the door for him to become project lead for the airport’s mechanical equipment replacement program. He oversees the overhaul of heavy-duty air conditioning units, fan coil units, pump motors and large air handler motors. This work requires technical precision and constant coordination to keep facility infrastructure reliable, modernized and running at peak performance. He is proud to guide these projects from planning through completion.
Jeff enjoys the fast-paced variety and the immediate impact of his work. He says fixing something like a stuck jet bridge and watching passengers step off the aircraft moments later is one of the most satisfying parts of the job.
