Eastbound Sky Harbor Boulevard Closed Nightly for Two Weeks
Heavy traffic expected due to project work at airport’s Terminal 3; passengers should allow for extra travel time, enter airport from east and consider using PHX Sky Train®
PHOENIX – Project work at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport’s Terminal 3 will be closing a major route through the airport nightly for two weeks. Beginning the evening of Sept. 23, eastbound Sky Harbor Boulevard on the north side of Terminal 3 will be closed 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. nightly, through and including the night of Monday, Oct. 6 (opening Tuesday morning, Oct. 7). All eastbound traffic during those times must detour through Terminal 3’s Inner Curb lanes, which will remain open. Significant traffic delays are expected due to the closure of this key corridor through the airport.
- Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time and strongly consider dropping off and picking up at the 24th or 44th Street PHX Sky Train® stations, to avoid the detour and heaviest traffic. The PHX Sky Train® is free and runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Using the PHX Sky Train® is a simple and convenient way to catch a flight or pick someone up without driving directly into the airport.
- Heavy back-up traffic is anticipated, impacting drive times to all parts of the airport, especially for those entering from the west side of the airport. Drivers should enter Phoenix Sky Harbor using the airport’s east entrance to avoid the closures. Please be aware of detour signs and drive with caution.
- Ground transportation at Terminal 3 will be relocated to the North Inner Curb, and Ride Share will be relocated to the South Outer Curb. Some Ride Share and other Ground Transportation companies may direct passengers to the 24th and 44th Street PHX Sky Train® stations for drop-offs and pickups, so passengers should be aware when booking those rides.
- Terminal 3 Garage access will be maintained on Westbound Sky Harbor Boulevard, and the garage exit to Eastbound Sky Harbor Boulevard will be maintained.
This two-week closure is necessary to continue progress on the airport’s Terminal 3 North 2 Concourse project. Specifically, contractors are installing support structures and need the 12-hour work windows nightly to complete the work safely for both the driving public and construction workers.
- Terminal 3 North Concourse 2 Project construction kicked off in spring 2025 and includes the addition of six new passenger gates. Terminal 3 handles approximately 25% of the airport’s passenger traffic. Overall, the airport served more than 52.3 million passengers in 2024. Adding six new gates will boost the total at Terminal 3 to 26 gates.
- The new concourse will add approximately 173,000 square feet of space. It will further elevate the passenger experience at PHX, with new shops, restaurants and a mezzanine with a lounge. The design will provide travelers with efficient access, comfort and aesthetic appeal, including beautiful views of Camelback Mountain. The project is pursuing a minimum of LEED Silver Certification through the U.S. Green Building Council.
See Phoenix Sky Harbor’s Roadway Restrictions webpage for more information on the upcoming closure and any updates. The Terminal 3 North 2 Concourse project will include additional road restrictions over the next year.
