Destination Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport: Fun Things to Do When You’re Here

August 18, 2026

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport isn’t just an airport. It’s a destination that celebrates the spirit of Arizona, offering travelers a vibrant blend of entertainment, relaxation, and authentic local culture. If you’re traveling through and looking for something to do, America’s Friendliest Airport® can fill your time with many unique and enjoyable activities.

Art, Culture, and Inspiration

Phoenix Sky Harbor is home to one of the largest airport art programs in the country, with more than 1,100 pieces in its collection. There are more than 40 exhibition spaces throughout the airport. Many exhibitions include interactive elements, such as story maps and QR codes that allow travelers to scan and learn more about the artists and their works, making the experience engaging and educational. The Phoenix Airport Museum regularly hosts immersive exhibitions, such as “Spectral Alchemy,” which uses light, neon, glass, and digital animation to create a luminous environment for calm and contemplation. The exhibition “Fluoresce” features glowing artworks created using blacklight paint. A push-button interactive lets visitors activate UV light over specimens like scorpions, moths, and minerals, demonstrating natural fluorescence firsthand.

Art installations aren’t limited to gallery spaces. The PHX Sky Train® stations feature award-winning terrazzo floors, each designed by a different artist, turning visitors’ journeys between airport facilities into a moving gallery. These floors are not only visually stunning but also tell unique stories about Arizona’s culture and landscape.

At the Rental Car Center, visitors can see “The Phoenix” mural by artist Paul Coze. This incredible work of art was the first piece of public art commissioned for the airport in the 1960s. It originally adorned the walls of Terminal 2 but was carefully relocated prior to the terminal’s closure. The mural depicts Phoenix’s past, present and future. Adjacent art exhibitions tell the story of the mural as well as some of the Airport’s history.

Dining and Shopping: Arizona’s Best

With more 50 restaurants, Phoenix Sky Harbor’s culinary landscape is a showcase of Arizona’s best. Local favorites like Matt’s Big Breakfast, The Tavern, and Sip Coffee & Beer offer everything from hearty breakfasts to craft cocktails and vegan tamales. Terminal 4 is currently in the process of undergoing a concessionaire transformation with many more new and exciting local concepts coming such as the Mexicano and The Farm at South Mountain.

For those craving a quick bite, national chains like Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, and Shake Shack can satisfy the hunger. For those who want to try a meal from a national celebrity chef, grab a burger from Bobby’s Burgers by Bobby Flay or the Trash Can Nachos from Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Kitchen + Bar, both located near Gate D11.

Shopping is equally diverse with more than 30 destinations ranging from luxury boutiques to local souvenir shops. Travelers can browse Arizona Highways, Bunky Boutique, and Indigenous for unique gifts, or pick up essentials at Hudson News and Tech On The Go.

Live Music, Culture Corner and Monthly Activities

Did you know PHX has live music four times a month? The airport’s Traveling Tunes program brings a diverse lineup of musicians to the terminals, offering everything from jazz and folk to contemporary pop, with performances scheduled regularly throughout the month to surprise and delight guests.

Phoenix Sky Harbor’s Culture Corner in Terminal 3 is a hub for cultural activities and performances. Travelers can participate in hands-on art projects, enjoy live music, and experience pop-up events that showcase local talent and traditions.

For those who love to read, the PHX Free Little Library, located adjacent to the Culture Corner post-security in Terminal 3, invites travelers to take or leave a book, fostering a sense of community and sharing among visitors.

Navigator Buddies and Mascot Appearances

Travel can be stressful, but Phoenix Sky Harbor’s therapy dogs, the Navigator Buddies, are here to help. These friendly pups, along with their handlers, roam the terminals to greet travelers and offer comfort. You may also spot the airport’s mascot, Amelia, during special events, adding a touch of fun and surprise to your journey.

A Desert Garden and Fast Wi-Fi

Fun fact: America’s Friendliest Airport® has its own desert garden. Outside Terminal 3, the desert garden provides a tranquil space to enjoy native plants and the Arizona landscape. There are also a number of sculptures there created by Arizona artists.

If you’re just looking to watch a movie or catch up on emails, not to worry, Phoenix Sky Harbor’s free Wi-Fi will keep you connected at record speeds. In fact, PHX consistently is among the top airports worldwide for fast download and speeds. Stream, work, and connect with ease while at America’s Friendliest Airport®.

Wellness, Accessibility, and Unique Amenities

Phoenix Sky Harbor is committed to traveler wellness and accessibility, offering healthy food options, a Fitness Trail in Terminal 4, apps for blind and low-vision travelers, a Compassion Corner featuring a chapel and sensory room, and a Children’s Play Area post-security in Terminal 3. The airport also offers twice-yearly Dementia Friendly Air Travel Workshops for those who are caregivers or those with dementia to learn how to more easily navigate the busy airport environment. The airport also has a free lanyard program, called the Compassion Cacti™ lanyard, that signals to employees those who are wearing it need extra time.

Plane Spotting

For aviation enthusiasts, Phoenix Sky Harbor offers designated areas in Terminals 3 and 4 for aircraft spotting, where you can watch planes take off and land from inside the terminals. Or, if you have time, pop up to the top of the Terminal 4 parking structure to get a great view of aircraft arriving and departing and the area’s beautiful mountains.

Take a Ride on the Train

The ride on the PHX Sky Train® itself is an experience, offering panoramic views and a fun, efficient way to navigate the airport. The PHX Sky Train® connects travelers between terminals, parking areas, the Rental Car Center, and the Valley Metro light rail. Check out the unique terrazzo flooring at each station. The train is free to ride and operates 24 hours a day.
